In our Diocese we use the term Interim Priest (note the capital letters) in a very specific way. It denotes a specially trained priest who is given a mandate to guide a parish community through a specific discernment process resulting in the appointment of a new incumbent. This Interim Priest is not eligible to be appointed as that parish’s next incumbent.
In a recent issue of the News, the Rev. Dr. Susan Titterington was described as the interim priest at St Chad’s – meaning that she held an indefinite term position while the parish discerned its future path. This did not involve the production of a Parish Profile nor was Susan given a mandate to help St Chad’s work toward a new Incumbency. Susan’s initial appointment was not as Interim Priest.
